Volunteer

Make your time count! As a non-profit, the Gichigamiin Museum cannot fulfill its mission without the support of volunteers. As a volunteer, you can help with day-to-day operations, help facilitate special events, complete our docent training program, and much more.

Docent Training Program

Learn to give tours of our permanent exhibition covering the five (5) regions of the U.S. and Canada. Expand the minds of the young and old, develop and share your knowledge of American Indian culture, and join the volunteers of the Mitchell Museum! We offer a self-paced docent training program to provide you with the skills, education, and confidence needed to lead school groups and adult tours through the permanent and temporary exhibitions and demonstrate how to make American Indian inspired crafts.

The program is extensive, but rewarding. Portions of the training include shadowing trained docents and conducting test tours with our education coordinator.

General Museum Assistance

We cannot fulfill our mission of promoting American Indian cultures and voices without the general assistance of dedicated volunteers.

On top of supporting our mission through in-kind assistance, volunteers will gain valuable customer service, administrative, and professional skills
