Through his activism and advocacy\, Sean is helping to reclaim and celebrate the rich culinary heritage of Indigenous communities around the world. \nSean has dedicated his career to supporting and promoting Indigenous food systems and Native food sovereignty. His goal is to make Indigenous foods more accessible to as many communities as possible through the non-profit North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NĀTIFS) and its Indigenous Food Lab professional Indigenous kitchen andtraining center. Working to address the economic and health crises affecting Native communities by re-establishing Native foodways\, NĀTIFS imagines a new North American food system that generates wealth and improves health in Native communities through food-related enterprises. \nSean’s first book\, The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen\, received the James Beard Award forBest American Cookbook in 2018\, and he was given the 2019 Leadership Award from theJames Beard Foundation. In 2021\, Sean opened Minnesota’s first full service Indigenousrestaurant\, Owamni\, which received the 2022 James Beard Award for Best New Restaurantin America on top of numerous awards nationwide. \nSean has just been named one of the Time 100 Most Influential People of 2023. DESCRIPTION:CNAIR Artist and Elders in Residence Full Schedule October 8 – 18\, 2024 \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				FERN RENVILLE  \nFern Renville is a storyteller\, artist\, playwright\, and enrolled citizen of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate. Fern lives in St. Paul\, Minnesota\, where she is currently investigating the role of nettle fiber in Dakota material culture as a Native Artist in Residence at the Minnesota Historical Society. As part of her residency she has been using nettle plant fiber\, processing into cordage\, and weaving a community fishing net. In her most recent residency she worked to bring her art back to her Dakota homelands to build a connection through nettle fiber and stories\, knowledge\, and sharing history. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				ROGER FERNANDES  \nRoger Fernandes is a Native American artist\, storyteller\, and educator whose work focuses on the culture and arts of the Coast Salish tribes of western Washington. He is a member of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe or Nəxʷsƛá̕ yə̕ m! and has a B.A. in Native American Studies from The Evergreen State College and an M.A. in Whole Systems Design from Antioch University. He has worked in a variety of arenas including Native education\, social work\, arts\, and culture. As an artist he practices and teaches Coast Salish design and as a storyteller he shares storytelling as a foundational human process for teaching and healing. He currently teaches courses on storytelling and art at the University of Washington\, Northwest Indian College\, and other learning institutions.

As a Midwest-based Native Hawaiian\, I continue to preserve\, perpetuate\, and protect Pacific Island cultural arts. Tours start promptly at 6:30pm\, meet at the Child of the Clouds statue.  Tour rates are: \n\n$10/adult\n$8/child\, teacher(w/id)\, senior\n\n  \n\n \n\nA Regional Tour of American Indian Cultures  \nOne of the Museum’s permanent exhibitions “A Regional Tour of American Indian Cultures” will take you through the major regions of the US and Canada and highlight the art and material culture of the tribes who live there. There are over 1\,200 federally recognized tribes that live across the US and Canada with differing though similar cultures\, languages\, and stories. The regions include: Woodlands\, Plains\, Southwest\, Northwest Coast and California\, and the Arctic/Sub-Arctic. While exploring each region\, you will learn about: Housing\, Transportation\, Food\, Clothing\, Art\, and Design.

She was raised on the reservation in North Dakota and had big city dreams.  She went on to college in Chicago\, Il where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and English as a second language. She is married to her best friend Joel and has two daughters Aiyanna and Ayasha that keep her plenty busy.  She teaches Preschool in Illinois where she seen the need for books that represent Native American children as people of today. She wrote this book based on her experiences as a child with her grandmother and her two daughter’s experiences with their adventurous grandmother Peggy as well. Silas\, CAE\, a recognized Native American leader with more than 30 years of experience who has successfully led various regional and national Native American and non-profit organizations. She currently serves as the Associate Director of Outreach and Engagement at Northwestern University’s Center for Native American and Indigenous Research.\nJaime Torres Carmona\, the Founder and Principal of CANOPY\, an award-winning architecture and urban design practice based in Chicago. Jaime is also a Baker and Ryerson Fellow\, contributing his expertise in urban design to the discussion.\n\nShelly and the panelists will address the challenges and barriers of affordable housing and the underrepresented Native American homeless population and delve into the groundbreaking establishment of the first affordable housing development for Native Americans in Chicago’s history. \n\n\n\nThis event is free\, but RSVP is required.\n \nThis discussion will be held in our annex building at 3009 Central Street\, free parking is available in our parking lot located behind the museum or free street parking.
